Tall Ships Race 2008

More than a sailing event, this is all about challenge, adventure, commitment, teamwork and thrills.  It is not necessary to have any sailing experience at all.  In the past, most of the crew taking part in the races gained their first sailing experience here.

The  Tall Ships Race is the world's largest international sailing event with up to 30 nationalities participating each year.

The traditional view of a Tall Ship is that of a square rigged windjammer.  In fact, a Tall Ship does not have to be big or tall.  The minimum waterline length is 9.14 metres for a ship to take part in the Tall Ships Races.  There is no maximum length.  The largest vessel to take part is the Russian ship Sedov at 150 metres.

The first race was held in 1956 when the worlds great square rigged ships sailed from Torbay to Lisbon.  Now between 80 and 120 Tall Ships take part in the event each year.

Sailing North East has competed in the Tall Ships Race every year since 1996.  It is an event especially designed to give young people the time of their lives.  Every year since 1996 Sailing North East has succeeded in doing exactly that.

We provide the opportunity for young people, mainly students to:

bulletExperience the thrill of sailing a large yacht offshore.
bulletTravel and visit at least 3 foreign countries.
bulletExperience different cultures and ways of life.
bulletMeet new people and make lasting friendships.
bulletEnjoy numerous parties at each port visited.
bulletBroaden their horizons and obtain a different outlook on life.
